Wendy Rene “After Laughter Comes Tears”
Since I posted a Stax song The RZA sampled yesterday I figured I might as well keep it going today. He took this song and made “Tearz” with it. “After Laughter Comes Tears” was released on Stax in 1964. Wendy first recorded with Stax as a member of the group The Drapels. When he went solo she used the stage name of Wendy Rene (picked by Otis Redding) instead of her given name Wendy Frierson. Wendy was supposed to be on the flight that killed Redding but had to miss it at the last second.

Skeeter Davis “The End of the World”
Released in December of 1962 and went on to be a hit in ‘63. Written by Sylvia Dee and Arthur Kent.

Kool G Rap “Sad”

William Bell “You Don’t Miss Water”
Lee Moses “I’m Sad About It”

The Crystals “He Hit Me (It Felt Like a Kiss)”
Taken from the Phil Spector compilation Phil Spector Back to Mono but originally released in 1962. The song is written by husband and wife writing team Gerry Goffin and Carole King. The story behind the song is they knew a singer, Little Eva, who they found out was being beaten by her boyfriend. Eva told them she felt she was beat because her boyfriend cared so much for her. They wrote the song to protest such abuse but the public felt it supported beating women so it never got much radio airplay.
